A MERMAID Beach father who drove his car into a Gold Coast canal in a drunken stupor has been fined $1500 and disqualified from driving for nine months.
Martin Robert Hill, 38, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence, claiming stress from the breakdown of his second marriage led to the car’s watery end.
The Southport Magistrates Court was today told that on March 2 Hill had taken a late night drive to “clear his head” but ended up drinking alcohol at a local bar.
He got back behind the wheel with a blood alcohol reading of 0.188 per cent and lost control of his Toyota Corolla on Pizzey Drive, driving into a canal.
He escaped uninjured and was found nearby by police.
The court was told Hill had a history of alcoholism and two previous convictions for drink driving but had recently checked himself into a 42-day rehabilitation program with the Salvation Army.
Magistrate George Wilkie convicted, fined and disqualified him and warned Hill any further convictions would likely land him in jail.
